Religion Lied To Me

What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either. Matthew 23:13

Religion lied to me. It lied to me about God. It lied to me about Heaven and Hell. It told me things about myself that were untrue. Religion tried to keep me down. It taught me to have low expectations in life. It instructed me to pray wrong, believe wrong, talk wrong, think wrong, and worship wrong. It threatened me, brought guilt, and turned me against God. There’s a word I almost never use, but I must use it here: hate religion.

Religion has been called “man’s attempt to be right with God.” Religion is man-made and is disgusting to God. That’s the reason I despise it so.

It’s About Knowing God

Every human being on Earth has within them a desire, not for religion, but to know God intimately. That’s a fact. Certainly, not everyone recognizes that their inner hunger is for God, but they’re at times aware of an inner emptiness that seems to eat them up. Man spends his days searching for fulfillment, but nothing can fill the void within but the true knowledge of God. Someone once said there’s a God-shaped hole on the inside of each of us that only He can fill.

Because people have believed the lies of religion, they think God is the last thing they would need or want. So they don’t look to Him; they look to everything else to try and fill that inner void.

The problem is, there is no substitute for God. Wealth and success don’t bring fulfillment. Alcohol and drugs only bring temporary relief (all while ruining your life). Relationships and sex might be the worst substitute, because when we look to others to meet our needs, we end up draining the life out of them too. Eventually, the relationship falls apart and dies.

Anything that we use to try and meet our needs or complete us, will ultimately backfire on us, let us down, and leave us wanting for more.

Don’t Believe the LIes

Religion—man’s religion—even religions that say they’re Christian—will say you just need to accept the things that come your way. It recognizes our emptiness and instructs us to look for comfort from a God who’s far away. It encourages us to pray to a God whom we could never know. It says we don’t have any promises or guarantees in this life. All lies!

Religion will give you things to occupy you, filling your life with empty prayers, tradition and routine, community service, and good deeds. The truth is, you can have the real fulfillment you’ve always longed for. Where you are in life, or how much of a mess you’ve made doesn’t matter. God’s your answer. He’ll reach you where you are and bring you higher and higher. You can love life. You can have real life.

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32

Religion taught me it’s wrong to think for myself.
Told me God wasn’t interested in my happiness.
Told me He never promised us our wants or desires.

Religion tried to make me think small, believe small, and live small.
It put artificial boundaries and limitations in my life.
It taught me right and wrong, but for the wrong reasons.
Religion keeps you on the outside, away from God.

I was raised in the Jewish religion. It didn’t work. I know some who were raised in other religions. They don’t work. I even know many who were raised as Christians but without a personal relationship with Christ. That for sure won’t work. True life and freedom is found only in Jesus Christ.
